Vista Theater

2024

Intro

The Vista is a historic movie theater in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, owned by Quentin Tarantino and dedicated to screening films on 35mm and 70mm. We partnered with the Vista team to build a digital brand from their existing logo and to design and develop a new website, with ongoing support for programming, events, and new initiatives.

The Challenge

The Vista runs a full calendar of new releases, classic films, matinees, and midnight screenings, with programming that changes every week. Moviegoers come for the experience of seeing films projected on 35mm and 70mm, but the Vista needed a consistent visual system to carry that experience across its website, social media, and promotions. The Vista needed a brand built around its history and a website that made showtimes and tickets quick to find, while staying easy for the team to update as new films and events were added.

Digital Branding
& Visual Design

Starting with the Vista’s existing logo, we built a digital brand around the theater’s history and the nostalgia of real film.

We explored three brand directions grounded in classic cinema references. The selected direction became a full visual system with bold serif typography, a warm palette of red, gold, cream, and black, distressed details, and textures drawn from film reels, posters, and archival materials. Film strip frames, instant photo layouts, and starburst stickers create recognizable elements that carry across the website, social media, and promotions like the theater’s 100th anniversary.

Website Design

We designed the Vista Theater website to bring the in-theater film experience online, making it easy to explore films and buy tickets. The site organizes current and upcoming films by date, with month-based schedule filters and ticket links for each showtime, including matinee and midnight screenings. Pages like the theater’s history timeline carry the same visual system, so the brand stays consistent from the homepage to each film listing.

Ongoing Collaboration & Support

We work as an ongoing partner to the Vista, staying closely involved as programming changes week to week. Beyond regular updates to films and showtimes, we design and build pages for larger initiatives as the theater takes them on, including IB Tech Fest and the Video Archives Cinema Club, a micro cinema inside the Vista opened by Quentin Tarantino. Each initiative gets its own landing page, films, and schedule within the Vista site, so new programming can be supported in real time.

Website Development & Custom CMS

We developed the Vista website on WordPress, built for frequent updates and a schedule that changes every week. The content management system is designed around how the theater programs its films, so staff can add new titles, showtimes, runtimes, and ticket links, and update homepage banners for events and promotions on their own. The result is a flexible foundation that supports ongoing changes to films, schedules, and events, with our team stepping in for larger builds and new features.
